Literature Text

We rejoin Sophie in part 6 some months after her kidnap at the hands of Madam Black. In defeating the psychic Mindblow, Sophie encounters Aerogirl, otherwise known as Maya Cierra. Maya is a powerful aerokinetic, but loses her powers when tied up, and she has a very poor reputation. Sophie decides to help her become more confident.

Sophie assists Maya in her investigation of a man named Ricardo Hosenfluss. He seems to have acquired a material - dexite - that might grant him the same power as the Indigo Titan, considered the world's strongest man. In their search they encounter a thief named Ocelot, who easily captures Maya with the aid of her drones, having encountered her several times before. She is bested by Sophie, who shows significantly improved combat skill, but manages to capture her too by inadvertently exploiting her weakness. She leaves the two bound in a closet.

Following this, we see that Sophie and Mariko have struck up a fairly close friendship, the standoffish Mariko expressing genuine pleasure in being in her company, despite her dismay that Sophie is associating with Aerogirl. Aerogirl, meanwhile, has found where Hosenfluss might be keeping the Dexite. Upon going there, the two are discovered and, after a back and forth battle, both captured by Ocelot. Notably, as Ocelot chloroforms Sophie, both women find it to be a very...intense experience, one which leaves a strong impression on Sophie.

However, Ocelot too is captured, by women working for Hosenfluss, with whom she used to be associated. All three are intended to be killed, but Aerogirl unveils staggering, unseen power, and saves them all. Afterwards, Sophie is once again captured by Ocelot, who tries to persuade her that her life as a superhero will bring her no happiness, and subjects the maiden to a sensual onslaught that leaves her utterly helpless, but she allows her to go free afterwards.

In part seven, we reacquaint with Insyte, and meet her brother, Ivan Nazarov. At a party at the Yugoslav embassy - history appears to have taken a different turn in this universe - we see Ocelot return again, under the name Rachel Artesia. The thief attempts to rob the Ambassador's daughter, but she herself is ambushed and captured by strange women in a kind of cult. Insyte too is captured, but her brother, who is himself a frighteningly powerful superhuman, saves her. Ocelot, however, is abducted.

After an argument with Mariko following another defeat, a distracted and confused Sophie is sought out by Insyte. Sophie's feelings about Ocelot are ambivalent at best, but she resolves to rescue her herself. Meanwhile, Ocelot is brainwashed by her abductor, the Sin Eater, a bizarre woman possessed of a strange array of powers. When Sophie arrives, Ocelot assists in taking her down, and she too is brainwashed. Ultimately they are saved by Insyte, who turns the Sin Eater's servants back to their real selves.

Distraught and upset by her ordeal, Sophie turns to Mariko, who admits her into her house, and assures her of her admiration for Sophie. She comforts her friend, who falls asleep watching television with her. To Mariko's dismay, she realises that she is in love with Sophie.

In part 8, we see the return of a villain named the Supremacist, thought long dead, and incredibly powerful. A large battle between dozens of heroes and villains breaks out as the heroes seek to foil the Supremacist, who is attempting to restore his youth. Sophie and Mariko assist. Combining their efforts, Enhancegirl, Valora, Spectra and Ivan Nazarov - who appears to have some history with the Supremacist - manage to defeat him, the last crucial blow dealt by Enhancegirl's cunning manipulation of the villain's youth-restoring device.

Sophie is publicly lauded, while a weakened Spectra is publicly embarrassed. Already wrestling with her feelings, this puts a wedge in the heroines' relationship. Sophie does, however, work with Valora - but the two are caught by Nyx, who has laid a trap for them. They are rendered helpless, and publicly humiliated, but are rescued, though they do not know by whom. Sophie believes it was Ocelot, and goes to confront her.

Ocelot confirms that it was her who rescued Sophie, and after a 'fight' of sorts, Sophie allows herself to be completely dominated. Ocelot has her way with the red-haired maiden, and the two begin a sexual relationship. We then discover that Ocelot was lying: Spectra rescued Sophie and Valora, but couldn't face Sophie afterwards, ashamed of her feelings, and certain that Sophie will not return them.

In part 9, we see Ocelot being rather domineering in her treatment of Sophie, who has been less active as a superhero following her public humiliation. Trouble comes to her, however and she is abducted. Mariko is abducted also, and the two are delivered to a woman named Adrienne, who steals their powers.

In a state of total shock, the two heroines are left utterly distraught by the loss of their abilities. As a returning Stellar vows at the very least to bring Adrienne to justice, Mariko has something close to a nervous breakdown. Sophie comforts her, however, lying in bed with her and holding her. She declares the depth of her friendship with Mariko, though expresses no romantic intentions.

Stellar, unfortunately, loses against Adrienne, and is drained of her powers as well. Sophie realises she can exploit Adrienne's newly acquired weakness to chloroform, and obtains some from Ocelot. She and Mariko go to try to get their powers bak. The thief, realising she genuinely wants to help, makes a deal with Hosenfluss in exchange for information about Adrienne. She uses this to help the three heroines, getting Spectra her powers back. Spectra brutally defeats Adrienne, restoring the others as well. Her joy is cut short when she sees Sophie and Ocelot kissing.

Throwing herself at Ivan Nazarov, who propositioned her earlier in the chapter, Mariko attempts to drown her sorrows. However, Ivan can't go through with it - much to his chagrin - and Mariko leaves. As she does, Insyte spots her, accidentally misinterpreting a memory she reads as showing that Sophie and Mariko are together.

Calling Sophie to express her happiness for 'the couple' she inadvertently lets Sophie know Mariko's feelings, leaving her in a state of total confusion. We also see Ocelot is not happy - Sophie had already been whispering Mariko's name in her sleep.

In part 10, Sophie is in a whirlwind of confusion. She sees Insyte to try to get her help sorting out her own feelings towards Rachel and Mariko, but the telepath can't really help. At the same time, Ocelot is told by Cybelle that Hosenfluss wants his favour. He needs a powerful superhuman.

For this reason, Ocelot tricks Mariko into fighting against a panoply of superhumans. Fighting valiantly, she is nonetheless felled, and kidnapped. Brought to an underground facility, she is drained of energy to power a device that will grant Hosenfluss the superpowers he's craved. It is made clear that this process will kill her.

Meanwhile, Insyte, perturbed by what she saw in Sophie's mind, tries to find Ocelot. Ocelot assumes this has something to do with Spectra, and captures her, intending to have Nyx disappear her somewhere. However, Nyx betrays her, and Insyte is rescued by Aerogirl. Ocelot's secrets are exposed, and Sophie finds out not only that she had Mariko captured, but also that she was responsible for Nyx's public humiliation of her.

Enraged, Sophie confronts Ocelot, and defeats her without the use of her powers. She forces information on Mariko's whereabouts out of the thief, and - with Insyte and Aerogirl - goes to the rescue. Despite being captured by Cybelle, Sophie escapes, and cuts a vicious swath through Hosenfluss' superhuman bodyguards, unlocking greater power in the process as she realises that her entire nervous system is enhanced, rather than just her senses.

Sophie saves Mariko, but Hosenfluss succeeds in acquiring his power. Ivan Nazarov interferes, however, and the two battle. During this, Mariko confesses her feelings to Sophie, who tearfully announces that she returns them. The two kiss, expressing great joy at having found their way to each other.

Aerogirl uses her hidden power to defeat Hosenfluss, who accidentally kills himself, unused to his power, and is celebrated, for once. Ocelot views the battle, and elects to let Sophie have her happiness, leaving Seacouver forever. Sophie and Mariko spend their first night together, very much in love.

At Hallowe'en, Sophie and some of her friends are abducted by a self-styled vampire named Erin. Sophie is, in the course of things, forced to reveal her identity as Enhancegirl to one of them. She manages to defeat the vampire by overloading her with the energy of her superhuman state.

Later, with Mariko, Sophie is about to tell the story of how she got her powers - until she realises that she doesn't know. She has never known, and didn't even know that she didn't know. Why this is the case remains an enduring mystery...
Aaaand here's the summary of arc 2. More complex, covers 6-10 and the Hallowe'en specil.
